Abstract

The objective of this research is to transform discarded or biomass waste materials into a resource for environmental cleanliness purposes. Al-substituted tobermorite was synthesized from inexpensive waste materials such as eggshells, rice husks and glass cullets. The synthesis was conducted using alkaline hydrothermal method and the following optimal condition: 150°C for 48 hours and the molar ratio of CaO/(SiO2 + Al2O3) = 0.83 and Al2O3/(Al2O3 + SiO2) = 0. Based on FTIR, Raman spectroscopy, XRD, SEM and DSC analysis, high-crystalline 11 Å tobermorite with large specific surface area was obtained from eggshells and rice husks as CaO and SiO2 powder reagents, respectively. The Pb2+ and Cd2+-uptake capacities were influenced by the amount of tobermorite, the specific surface area, as well as the tobermorite crystallinity..
